Die Ausstellung im Haus der Elektronischen Künste Basel präsentierte vom 21.01.2016 - 20.03.2016 Werke, die sich auf ‚MBCBFTW’ – «My Boyfriend Came Back From the War» – von Olia Lialina beziehen und anhand dieser die Entwicklung des World Wide Web als Medium und Technologie anschaulich machten. Eines der zentralen Werke der künstlerischen Praxis im Internet der 1990er Jahre ist die Arbeit MBCBFTW der russischen Künstlerin Olia Lialina, die 2016 ihr zwanzigjähriges Bestehen feierte. Die Arbeit hatte Pioniercharakter – als interaktive Erzählung ebenso wie als Werk der Netzkunst. Sie thematisierte die Geschichte zweier Menschen, die nach einem Krieg versuchten, miteinander über den Krieg zu reden. Andreas Wenger wurde eingeladen, in enger Zusammenarbeit mit Olia Lialina und Sabine Himmelsbach die Ausstellungsgestaltung zu entwickeln. Die für das Werk MBCBFTW typische zweidimensionale weisse Rahmung der auf schwarzem Grund erscheinenden interaktiven Inhalte wurde räumlich auf die Tragstruktur des Ausstellungsraumes des HEK übersetzt. 13 von 27 durch Olia Lialina in ihrem privaten Archiv unter dem Titel «The Last Real Net Art Museum» gesammelten Arbeiten, die sie im Sinne eines Remix auswählte, wurden im Ausstellungsraum um die zentrale Arbeit MBCBFTW von 2006 gruppiert. Im Rahmen der Ausstellung erschien die Publikation «My Boyfriend Came Back From The War – online since 1996», die neben den Werkdokumentationen der präsentierten Arbeiten zentrale Essays zur Entwicklung von Netzkultur und künstlerischer Praxis im Internet enthält.
From 21.01.2016 - 20.03.2016, the exhibition at the House of Electronic Arts Basel presented works that refer to 'MBCBFTW' - «My Boyfriend Came Back from the War» - by Olia Lialina and illustrate the development of the World Wide Web as a medium and technology. One of the central works of artistic practice on the Internet in the 1990s is the work MBCBFTW by the Russian artist Olia Lialina, which celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2016. The work had a pioneering character - as an interactive narrative as well as a net art work. It thematized the story of two people who tried to talk to each other about war after a war. Andreas Wenger was invited to develop the exhibition design in close collaboration with Olia Lialina and Sabine Himmelsbach. The two-dimensional white framing of the interactive contents appearing on a black background which is typical for the MBCBFTW work was spatially translated into the supporting structure of the HEK exhibition space. 13 of 27 works collected by Olia Lialina in her private archive under the title «The Last Real Net Art Museum», which she selected as a remix, were grouped in the exhibition space around the central work MBCBFTW from 2006. As part of the exhibition the publication «My Boyfriend Came Back from The War - online since 1996» was published which, in addition to the documentation of the works presented, contains central essays on the development of net culture and artistic practice on the Internet.
